Time to Get into Shape!

December 28, 2009

As if trying on workout clothes equates to working out actually.

Sigh.

I swear it’s not because of New Years’, but lately I have been feeling really out of shape.  Ever since final exam period, I’ve been totally slacking in the fitness domain – probably because I realized I could get away with it.

Since overcoming my running addiction (you can get addicted!), I actually lost around 6-7 pounds – although this may also be attributable to the fact that it was around this time that I simultaneously transitioned from being a vegetarian to being a high raw vegan.  I definitely know I didn’t lose muscle.  Regardless, I went from running 7 days a week (one and a half hours to two hours at a time) to running once a week and doing intervals or the elliptical either once or twice  a week.  I was OK initially – perhaps my body needed the rest and energy to assimilate the dietary changes – but now I feel like I’m ready…

I’m ready to get back into shape!

(Now that I’ve typed that out…I realize how little I actually know about goal-setting – because I have no concrete plan other than : exercise more! Exercise a lot!  I think I need milestones…ya know? Like those stickers that we used to get in grade 1 for completing dictation every week.)  To be clear, I’m pretty OK with my current weight, but I’m thinking I need some kind of quantification to motivate me.  I have decided rather unofficially to set myself a goal of losing 10 pounds.

Internet, hold me accountable.

Interestingly enough, I’m looking forward to going back to school and feeling the pressures of work and life.  It’s a curious thing (I’m a curious creature) but I find that being busy actually forces me to become more desperate for making effective use of my time – for example, setting aside time for exercise!  It’s weird that now that I have no excuse NOT to exercise, I just don’t do it!  Terrible, isn’t it?

But I’m working on it.  I’ll be a fitness addict soon enough – once an addict, always an addict, right?

In the meantime… since I enjoyed the remnants of yesterday’s Red and Orange Hemp Soup so much, I thought I’d spread the love.

Red and Orange Hemp Soup

1 1/2 red peppers, diced

½ big carrot, diced

½ cup hemp seeds

2 tbsp lemon juice

1 tsp turmeric

1 tsp soy sauce

2/3 – ¾ cup water

salt and pepper to taste

Blend all ingredients together, adjusting water as necessary to achieve desired consistency.  Enjoy scooped into kale wraps, on top of eggplant “nachos”, or just plain jane!

Well, I always find that just wearing workout clothes makes me more energetic and likely to do something active.

    That soup looks delicious!

First of all – WOW! That soup is stunning, what a gorgeous color! Must make that for myself soon!

Good luck with your goal to work out more. I think since you said you used to be a workout machine you definitely won’t have any trouble getting right back into it. Be careful, though! Working out too much can be a very bad thing! Have fun and listen to yourself so you make the right decision. And definitely keep posting more of these amazing looking recipes!

Oh! I love your new workout clothes! I’m finally buying some new sets for myself this weekend – it has been years and I’m down to only one pair of decent workout pants!

Hon, do you have 10 lbs to lose? Please don’t get wrapped up in the numbers. If you want to exercise, do it for health & pleasure. I hate tone a mom, but I just want you to take care of yourself!!!

Thanks for the comment. Maybe you could set a specific fitness type of goal instead of a weight loss goal – like trying different types of cardio or working on improving your running speed with 30 min. interval workouts or something like that?

First, your food is beautiful. It always is. But really, you need to go into food photography or art or something to use this gift of yours! And your recipe….yum! Kristen Suzanne and Gena have both done things w/ hemp seeds too..and I always see these creations and think: Need to go buy hemp seeds! Thanks for the inspiration!

Next. Your weight. First, I agree w/ Mama Pea, do you have 10 lbs to lose? You look amazing and I wouldnt think you need to lose any weight?!!

Next. Be very very very careful what you put on the internet. You really dont want negative comments in your inbox. Everyone says “oh they wouldnt bother me” til you get some. Or many. Trust me. You dont want them and when people know too much about you, they think they can tell you or say whatever, and they are never nice. So sweetie, as a veteran and a mother and someone 15 yrs older than your sweet face :) please think twice about using #’s and revealing too much bout yourself. Dont want u to get hurt by the anon’s and the rudeness that can happen out there…
    xoxo

Hey Running 7 times a week??? you really set up a good example for me! I kinda let myself go a bit these days (just had a big grill dinner…). as you said, it’s time to back on track and start running :-d I do think running is addictive, and its so effective that you want to keep on doing it !!
btw, I can see the muscle lines on your arms, you are in great shape girl!!!!!

I love the color of that soup….Such a brilliant, cheerful color!

But I have to agree with Averie and Mama Pea…don’t get wrapped up in numbers. Numbers are deceiving, and they can spiral you into another vortex of obsession and stress. Make ultimate, REAL health (as defined by clinical terms, not society’s beauty standards) your goal, not a certain number.

Soup looks yummy. I tried making the original recipe but I think my spices were wrong or something because it didn’t taste that great. This new version sounds good, though.

Thanks for stopping by my blog the other day! : D
