Ah, the Working Life
Yesterday marked my one-month anniversary with full-time working life. Yes, that is correct : the past four weeks have seen me immersed mercilessly into the world of finance, business, pencil skirts and pearl necklaces — making money and such — and as a result I can now legitimately call myself a ‘grown-up’. (Whether or not this is true in actuality is questionable.)
I found out at work today that one of the girls from my training class (we were 20 in total) left. She was the first to leave from our group. In one sense, I presume that is what the 3-month probationary period is for — to ensure that the position is a match for both the organization as well as for the employee — but it is nonetheless surprising when a sudden leave does happen. Although I am a wee bit sad, I am really ultimately and truly happy for my friend because near the end of her time with us, she had shared with me how she felt and I could understand her completely. I am certain that she will be embarking on a career pathway that will bring her much more personal fulfillment, and I absolutely admire her for doing what she had to do to follow her dreams.
On my end, I still dream too. I dream a lot about this: “To thine own self be true” — and wonder if I’ll ever have an opportunity to live up to that mantra within my current working environment. A lot of the corporate world seems rubbish to me (or in the words or Holden Caulfield, “phony”), but maybe I’m supposed learn to accept that as a fact of life. I just don’t know if I can. And if I can’t… then what?

hey aletheia! =) all the best… stay strong in Christ and keep running the race with your eyes fixed upon Him! Allow His goodness to shine through you no matter where He has placed you… praying for you sister! btw, i stumbled across this blog awhile ago and thought you might be encouraged by it too http://www.aholyexperience.com/ and i found a cool website on foooood http://worldcommunitycookbook.org/season/guide/index.html … enjoy!
Man, I feel the same way most of the time. I don’t find the corporate world phony as much as it is boring and often self-interested. I think I’d rather be doing that makes people happy, and more importantly makes me happy in return.
Hello hello, my dear. First off, congrats on the full time working life. It’s a huge change from studying for exam after exam and writing paper after paper eh? In a way, I feel much more freedom with the working life.
I think it was great that your friend was able to realize that the job wasn’t eight for her. That’s a big part of finding the career that’s right for you. Sometimes you just need to try out different jobs before you find the one that feels right and then from there you build your career. In a perfect world, we graduate from university, go on to find the perfect career and work till we retire. But this ain’t a perfect world so we do have to face all the phoniness of the corporate world and somehow try to fit in. The way we try to fit in is up to us though. Always follow your morals and remember that if you’re not happy with what you’re doing, there’s always a way out. You hold the power, my dear. Best of luck with full time working and don’t forget to have fun in between. Go get em girl!
I think it’s definitely putting you in a spot to test you, to show you that you can learn so much from the environment, both good and bad. it’s a opportunity to challenge yourself- learning, growing, experiencing. It can be hard, especially when you feel like you may not be in line with what you truly want…but sometimes the ‘packaging’ is less than stellar, but the present inside is beautiful <3
